CONSIDERATION FOR MOTOR LOADS WHEN SIZING GENERATORS
Speaker: Gary Olson
Title: President KWRx, LLC Consulting
Gary Olson is a retired Onan/Cummins power generation employee that now operates kWRx, LLC--a consulting business directed toward optimizing on-site power systems. Over his long career, he has been involved in many customer support roles related to on-site power, product development, and codes and standards work related to generator applications. He has also been in several management roles within Onan and Cummins both in the field and in the corporate environment.
Presentation Topic:
One of the more challenging issues for a consulting engineer is getting a clear consensus on the recommended generator set sizing from various manufacturers when a site has a high concentration of motors to start with a generator set. It's perhaps even harder to come up with a clear and technically valid basis for evaluating proposed hardware from suppliers.
The technical presentation for this meeting will provide a review of technical considerations in motor starting applications and provide recommendations for specifying motor starting performance than any supplier can respond to; as well as a clear basis for use in evaluating the acceptability of proposed equipment based on commonly available equipment parameters.
