It’s About Time!
Leveraging IEEE-1588 Precision Time Protocol in Power System Monitoring
SYNOPSYS
Electrical anomalies are known to cascade through a power system in ¼ of an electrical cycle or faster. These events can cause costly operational outages and be time consuming to resolve. To help Facility Engineers manage the safety and reliability of electricity, many facilities deploy power monitoring or management systems. A single and precise time baseline is essential for effective management of these systems. With relays, meters and other monitoring devices synchronized with Precision Time Protocol, the combined data will show precisely what happened to the millisecond so even a sub-cycle sequence of events can be examined.
In this presentation, James Clark will explore the evolution of precision time protocol in power monitoring and control systems and how today Precision Time Protocol (PTP) as defined in IEEE-1588 standard makes millisecond time synchronization over Ethernet simple and affordable, without the requirement of specialty networking equipment.

During Darryl’s more than 20 years in technology he has held a wide range of leadership roles in operations, information security, audit & compliance, solutions engineering, and sales. Today he leads a team of sales executives that pursue the most sophisticated enterprise technology buyers of data center infrastructure in the world, primarily within the financial, healthcare, and high-tech verticals.
Darryl is a native born Atlanta resident and holds a BSBA from Auburn University, an MBA from the University of Georgia, and a number of technical, security, and business certification/designations from leading organizations.
In his free time Darryl enjoys playing guitar in his band, investing time in technology related non-profits, jogging, and spending time with his wife, 2 daughters, and dog.
