DESIGNING FOR DATA CENTERS WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A MOTOR

Data Centers use 2% of the world's energy and 40% of that is used to keep things cool. Pumps, fans and compressors are continuously being required to meet higher energy standards. Yet, most electric motors are over 10 years old and use direct-on-line induction, controlling speed by changing belts. This method of speed control is less efficient than pairing a motor with a variable speed drive (VFD). It is also unlikely that a motor designed over a decade ago meets the efficiency standards of today. Adding a VFD can reduce power consumption by 25% or more depending on the previously designed motor efficiency. While using a VFD to control your motor has many benefits, it can also present some challenges. The common mode voltage will create shaft currents that will cause EDM (electric discharge machining), and if left this way, will cause fluting and frosting of the bearing raceways. Therefore, selecting a motor designed to mitigate the damage from shaft currents is critical. Join Bevan Christiansen, Segment Manager, Air Handling and HVAC, for ABB to find out:
